Trauma can be a life-altering experience that leaves deep emotional and psychological scars. It occurs when an individual experiences a distressing event on a level that exceeds their ability to cope or integrate the involved emotions. Unprocessed trauma can manifest in anxiety, anger, sadness, flashbacks, PTSD and/or difficulties with sleep and relationships.

We are here to provide a safe space to process your trauma and pursue healing.

Healing from trauma includes processing the painful event, recognizing your beliefs and emotions, and allowing God to bring about healing.

How can Counseling Help you Heal from Trauma?

Trauma refers to a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that overwhelms your ability to cope, causing feelings of helplessness, diminishing your sense of self and affecting your ability to feel a full range of emotions.

Traumas can stem from various situations such as physical or sexual abuse, natural disasters, witnessed violence, accidents, major health events or the loss of a loved one. The impact of trauma varies from person to person and in the wake of unprocessed trauma, emotional, mental and physical symptoms are common.

You might find yourself feeling numb or feeling “unlike” yourself and feeling forever changed by the experiences you’ve faced. You might find yourself feeling out of control or having difficulty regulating emotion - experiencing swings of anger, fear, sadness, shame. You might find yourself feeling misunderstood and wanting to withdraw from loved ones. Memories might replay in your mind constantly or perhaps you struggle to recall the painful events altogether. You might find yourself questioning your worth, feeling helpless and struggling to see the hope of a happier future.

Studies show that a staggering 70% of adults in the US have experienced trauma in their lives, and if you are working through trauma, whether recent or in the distant past, you are not alone and you can find true healing to overcome this season and even thrive.

As counselors, we are here to walk with you through your healing. Counseling provides a safe space to express your feelings, process your traumas and beliefs, develop healthy coping strategies, resolve the impacts of the trauma and ultimately, overcome this season.

Is Trauma Counseling Right for You?

Deciding whether trauma counseling is right for you is a deeply personal decision but know that there is no “wrong time” to seek help.

As a society, when we think of trauma, we often think of big “T” trauma where life or physical safety are at stake such as war, abuse, violence, etc. However, trauma can take other forms as well and while little “t” trauma (such as relationship loss/divorce, infidelity, legal or financial issues, interpersonal conflict, unmet performance expectations, etc) does not typically involve violence or disaster, it is still trauma and can cause significant distress. Healthy processing is crucial to healing from any form of trauma.

If you've experienced a traumatic event and are struggling with symptoms like trouble concentrating, loneliness, anxiety, depression, loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed, flashbacks, changes to sleep or appetite, difficulty regulating emotions, or other impacts to your sense of self, your relationships, your career or your quality of life - it may be time to consider seeking professional help.

It's important to remember that there's no 'right' way to react after experiencing trauma - everyone's response is different. Trauma counseling offers hope for those who have experienced distressing events by providing tools and strategies aimed at facilitating healing. While it may not erase painful memories completely, it can equip you with skills necessary for managing them effectively thereby improving your overall quality of life.

Our Approach to Trauma Counseling:

At True Hope Christian Counseling, we provide a holistic approach to healing from trauma by targeting emotional, mental and spiritual health simultaneously.

We believe that true health is found in relationship with Christ and rely on biblical truths to inform concepts, beliefs, and behaviors. By integrating theology with research-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), we are able to provide comprehensive care that leads to more sustainable recovery outcomes over secular-therapy alone.

Through counseling, we provide a safe space for our clients to explore their thoughts, feelings, behaviors and faith. We aid our clients in identifying their thoughts patterns and reevaluating their assumptions in order to replace distortions and maladaptive behaviors with more balanced and effective thinking to restore sense of safety, self-worth, confidence and health.

We walk with our clients through their healing journey so that they may reconceptualize their understanding of the traumatic event(s), themselves and their ability to cope - finding hope amidst our pain through His grace and love and look to Him for restoration and healing.

Trauma Counseling FAQs

  • Prior to your first session, we ask that you access and complete the required intake forms located on the client forms page. You will want to bring these with you to your initial appointment. If you prefer, you can instead arrive 10 minutes ahead of your first session to complete these items.

Upon arrival, please wait in the waiting room and your counselor will come out to greet you at your scheduled time. Your first session will be used to get to know you and your goals for counseling. You will be invited to share at your comfort level, and we will use this time to begin working towards your counseling goals.

At this time, we will also make a plan for ongoing therapy. Some find relief after a few sessions whereas others benefit from more regular, ongoing sessions.

The main goal of trauma counseling isn't necessarily to forget the traumatic event but rather to learn how to manage its memory without it causing distress or interfering with daily life. Through ongoing therapy, your counselor will guide you through different therapeutic techniques designed specifically for this purpose.

Ultimately, the duration and frequency of ongoing sessions will be unique to you, your progress and how best to achieve your therapeutic goals, heal from your trauma and find relief.

  • Research has shown that trauma counseling is indeed effective in helping individuals recover from their traumatic experiences. In particular, counseling can allow you to:

    • Establish healthy coping skills

    • Replace negative thought patterns

    • Reframe the traumatic experience

    • Restore connection and improve relationships

    • Process feelings and beliefs

    • Relieve persistent rage, anger, and frustration

    • Reduce symptoms and triggers

In particular, a 2018 study found that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is among the most effective therapeutic approaches to treat trauma with between 61% - 82% of study participants with PTSD no longer meeting the diagnostic criteria after undergoing CBT therapies.

Dealing with trauma is not easy and recovery takes time but seeking professional help can provide you with the necessary tools to navigate your journey so that you find relief and healing.
